09/01/2008 - A simple reminder about hurricane season
The largest dangers to electronic equipment during these storms are water damage, and power surges. Below are some steps that you can take to help make sure that your computer systems are protected from damage during the upcoming hurricanes.
- Unplug all power cords from the wall. Even with the power turned off, an electrical surge can travel through a plugged in cord and electronic equipment
- Unplug all data and phone cables. Power surges can travel through phone and data wires just as easily as power lines.
- Move all computers off of the floor. If your building has any minor flooding you can prevent damage by simply putting your computer on top of a desk or table.
- Wrap sensitive electronics in plastic trash bags. If you have any roof leaks or driven rain entering from a broken window you can help protect your electronics by covering them in plastic.
